HIMARI

The name himari is most often written 陽葵, joining hi (陽), "sun," "sunlight," to aoi (葵), the hollyhock or mallow — here given the special nanori reading mari, a reading that exists only within names, not in ordinary vocabulary. The character 葵 belongs to a family of plants long associated in Japanese with heliotropism, the turning of a flower's face to follow the sun's course; the word himawari (向日葵), sunflower, is built from the same logic, "facing toward the sun." Himari inherits this movement without stating it outright — sun and flower joined, the gesture of turning implied rather than named.

The name has no deep classical lineage; it belongs to the wave of given names that rose sharply in Japan from the 2000s onward, favored for the warmth of its sound and the brightness of its constituent characters rather than for any inherited literary weight. In this it differs from names like koharu or akari, which carry the sediment of centuries of poetic use — himari is closer to a wish spoken freshly, unweighted by precedent.

With this totem, Amélie Dauteur takes up a devotion without fixed object: the flower that turns not because it chooses a direction, but because it cannot do otherwise. Where jun holds inward and jin turns toward another person, himari turns toward something larger and impersonal, following a light it did not choose.

HIMARI does not ask what you face. It asks: what do you turn toward, without deciding to?
