FUTOSHI

The name futoshi is built on a single root: futo- (太), "thick," "great," "ample" — the same character that describes a thick rope, a bold line, a body of physical substance. As a given name, traditionally borne by men, it carries the wish embedded in it plainly: that the child grow generous, substantial, unshakeable — a person of weight in the world, not in the pejorative sense but in the sense of gravity, of presence that does not waver.

The character has a long life in the visual and calligraphic traditions of East Asia. In the practice of bokuseki, Zen ink calligraphy, the thick stroke (futoi hitsu) is not decorative excess but a register of conviction: brush pressure translates directly into the visibility of the hand's intention, the ink's saturation recording the calligrapher's breath and resolve in a single irreversible gesture. Thickness, in this tradition, is not the absence of refinement but its opposite — the mark of a line drawn without hesitation.

With this totem, Amélie Dauteur takes up thickness as a figure for constancy — the body rendered not as outline but as mass, not as suggestion but as fact. Where other totems in this cycle summon what is spun from fragments or named before its meaning settles, futoshi holds its ground: unhurried, undivided, sufficient unto itself.

FUTOSHI does not ask to be resolved. It asks: what, in you, does not need to be made lighter to be seen?

Amelia Dauteur

Te elementy, zaczerpnięte z natury, podkreślają pierwotny i zmysłowy charakter totemów”.
